New movie news has something old and something new.

The old: Nothing is set yet, but Sony Pictures seems to have a new Men In Black film in development, according to Deadline. There’s no word of who might star, but Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremner has been tasked with scripting the next installment of the sci-fi comedy franchise.

Deadline reports that Sony hopes that once Bremner has finished the script, original series star Will Smith would get an early draft in the hope that he would reprise the role of Agent J in some capacity, whether as a star or in a mentor role to new talent. There’s no word on whether Tommy Lee Jones might be asked to return as Agent K.

It must be said that Smith is not attached to the project and will not commit to anything until he has read a script. Like the Bad Boys franchise, Sony considers Men In Black as a lucrative IP. The franchise has earned a collective $1.9 billion dollars globally at the box office (counting the original, two sequels and the 2019 reboot MIB: International).

Also at Sony, Gone Girl scribe Gillian Flynn is teaming up with Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, Mother!) for a completely original erotic thriller. Flynn will pen the script while Aronofsky will produce.

The plot details are being kept under wraps on the project, which is in development at the studio. Flynn is best known for her best-seller Gone Girl, which she adapted for the screen in 2014 with Ben Affleck and Rosamunde Pike starring. Flynn is also writing the script for the remake of Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, which is being directed by Tim Burton over at Warner Bros. Her previous adapted works include the series Sharp Objects and the film Dark Places.

Aranofsky’s last film as a director was Caught Stealing, a thriller starring Austin Butler which was produced by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. His feature debut was Pi before he directed Requiem For A Dream. He followed that up with The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, Mother! and The Whale. His producing credits include White Boy Rick, The Good Nurse and Some Kind of Heaven.
