Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, hasn’t changed a lot since she literally crashed into the final few scenes of Superman this past summer.

In the trailer for Supergirl, her cousin Kal-El (David Corenswet) is nowhere in sight, and Kara’s only companion seems to be Krypto, her loyal Superdog, who pads around her messy apartment while she sleeps off another bender. She even has to celebrate her 23rd birthday solo, drinking a flaming shot in a bar.

But all that changes when she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, a girl who recruits Supergirl to help her bring extra-strength justice to the man who killed her father. There’s more to the story, of course; WB’s official logline reads, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl (Milly Alcock), reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

Craig Gillespie directed Supergirl from a script by Ana Nogueira, who will be writing the upcoming Wonder Woman reboot. She adapted the story from the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

At a private preview party for Supergirl, co-CEO James Gunn and Gillespie spoke about their vision of their title character.

Gillespie told the assembled crowd of VIPs that unlike her cousin, Supergirl definitely doesn’t have it together. “This is really an anti-hero story,” he said onstage. “She’s got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”

Gunn agreed. “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all…like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

In the trailer, Kara tells Ruthye that Superman “sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”

In addition to Alcock, Supergirl stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Old Guard, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s human parents, and Jason Momoa. Momoa won’t be reprising his role as Aquaman from the last iteration of DC movies; in this film he’ll play the alien mercenary Lobo.

Supergirl is due to crash into theaters on June 26th, 2026.
