James Van Der Beek plays a character far, far from Dawson Leery in his final film role.

A trailer for The Gates, starring Van Der Beek, dropped Wednesday and in it, he plays the leader of a megachurch compound caught in the act of breaking a commandment or two by three guys in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Mason Gooding, Algee Smith, and Keith Powers play three college students on a road trip gone wrong after an ill-advised who take an unplanned shortcut that leads them to an exclusive gated community Forced to proceed on foot, they find themselves at a mansion in time to witness Van Der Beek’s sinister pastor character Jacob commit murder. Trapped, the trio try to stay alive, knowing they can’t turn to the authorities as the community hunting them is all too likely to pin the murder(s) on them.

In the trailer, Jacob proclaims, “I have been called upon to lead this community, and those boys seek to destroy us. Find them and let God’s will be done.” Holding the trio at gunpoint, says, “You’ve seen what happens when people get in my way.”

Van Der Beek passed away at age 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer on February 11th. The Gates writer-director John Burr said in a statement that working with the Dawson’s Creek actor was a joy. “We were incredibly fortunate to have worked with him on this film. He brought experience and perspective to the role, and he built profound relationships with his fellow cast members and with the crew. And while he was deeply dedicated to his performance as the flawed, amoral antagonist of our story, between scenes he effortlessly morphed back into the grounded, charming conversationalist he was at his core…on behalf of the entire filmmaking team, I’d like to express our heartbreak at James’ passing, and our joy to have been so lucky to know him.”

Though this is Van Der Beek’s final film role, he will be seen in Prime Video’s upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, as a recurring guest star alongside Lexi Minetree, who plays the title role.

Lionsgate will open The Gates in theaters on March 13th.
