Pop star Madonna hasn’t graced a screen of any size since 2003, but that’s about to change.

Apple TV’s multiple-award winning series The Studio, now shooting its second season, will revive the biopic about the “Vogue” songstress that was to star Julia Garner as Madonna, but got axed in 2023…or at least, the concept of the film.

The Studio, which stars Seth Rogan as the head of fictional Continental Studios, will have a two-episode story arc where the movie was made, but by Continental, not Universal Pictures as originally planned back in 2021 when they won the rights to the story.

The arc will show the Continental team, played by core cast members Rogen, Kathryn Hahn, Bryan Cranston, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders as they take their finished biopic to Italy to show at the Venice Film Festival. Madonna and Garner will appear as themselves, and Donald Glover, who has been photographed on set, may have a role.

Madonna’s last TV appearance was in a cameo role on sitcom Will & Grace back in 2003. Her last movie role was in 2002’s Swept Away. Although the rights to her biopic lapsed with Universal, Netflix is now developing an autobiographical series about the Material Girl, directed by Shawn Levy. Garner is not involved in that series.

The Studio is a satirical comic look at the running of a Hollywood production house and won 13 Emmys and a handful of other awards for its first season. Apple TV renewed it back in 2025 after its first season ended, and most of the cast will return for the follow-up season, barring, of course, the late Catherine O’Hara. Madonna, Garner and Glover join a host of other famous actors who appeared on the show, either as themselves or in other roles.

A second season premiere date has not been announced yet.
