Godzilla hits up the Big Apple in the new teaser for Toho’s sequel to its 2023 global sensation Godzilla Minus One.

Takashi Yamazaki returns as the writer/director of Godzilla Minus Zero, opening in November. The sequel “picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity,” according to Toho Studios.

In the brief teaser, we see that all is not well in Japan. Although Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and Noriko (Minami Hamabe) had a happy ending at the end of Minus One, believing that they had destroyed the indestructible monster, the audience got to see that was mere wishful thinking as a hunk of Godzilla’s flesh started to expand at the bottom of the sea.

In the trailer, it looks like Godzilla is taking in a bit of sightseeing in New York City, as we see him passing behind the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island.

Godzilla Minus One earned $116 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film of all time. It also took home the Oscar for best visual effects that year.

Yamazaki was in Las Vegas for CinemaCon and promised an even more heart-wrenching film this time around. “In this new film, an even deeper desperation will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family.”  He added, “The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one. Right now, we are pouring all of our technology into this new story of desperation and hope to theaters around the world.”

Both Kamiki and Hamabe return for Minus Zero, which was produced by Kazuaki Kishida. Godzilla Minus Zero will be released in the United States on November 6th of this year. The Toho film is once again about a year ahead of its American counterpart: Legendary Entertainment will release their next film in their franchise, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, in 2027.
