Intergalactic News: CinemaCon Reveals from ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars’ As Festival Concludes

CinemaCon 2026 wrapped on Friday, and amid the flurry of news about upcoming movies, we’re singling out a couple updates from some “Star-studded” films.
Starting with Star Trek, during its time in the spotlight, Paramount confirmed that a new Star Trek movie is in the works. However, Paramount did the same thing two years ago at CinemaCon 2024 and no film was put into development following that announcement.
This time around, Paramount could be more serious about getting a new franchise film going. Star Trek: Discovery was the last film to make it to the big screen; all new Trek entries in between then and now have been streaming series.
Paramount disclosed no new details in its panel this week, but last November they announced that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) will write and direct a new Star Trek movie that was not connected to any existing Trek movies.

Over in the Star Wars universe, Disney wowed their audience with the first 17 minutes of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released theatrically next month.
Based on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian starring Pedro Pascal, this is the first time the title characters have been featured on the big screen.
A shorter description of the open containing a few spoilers ahead: Introduced by director Jon Favreau, the film’s open showed Din Djarin (Pascal) infiltrate a secret meeting of Empire sympathizers and destroy some massive AT-AT walkers on a snowy planet. The bounty hunter shot, stabbed and flamed his way through the base full of ‘Snowtroopers’, with the assistance of pint-sized Jedi master Grogu, who uses the force to detonate a recon droid.
We won’t spoil the rest of the open, but the footage did introduce two new characters: Sigourney Weaver as a New Republic leader named Ward and Jeremy Allen White as the voice of Rotta the Hutt, the son of the corpulent slug from Return of the Jedi, Jabba.
The first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian and Grogu will fly into theaters on May 22nd.
