Warner Bros. trailer featuring its 2021 releases

Yes, it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it thing, but it’s still the first look we’ve ever had at this Godzilla taking on King Kong. Saturday, Warner Bros/HBO Max dropped a trailer featuring a quick look at its 2021 same-day release slate.

In a new preview titled “Same Day Premieres,” HBO Max edited together footage from Godzilla vs. KongMortal KombatSpace Jam 2, as well as The Suicide Squad. Mortal Kombat is set to premiere on April 16th, and Space Jam 2 with LeBron James on July 16th. Suicide Squad will debut on August 6th.

Also included was Will Smith’s upcoming King Richard, Denzel Washington’s The Little ThingsThose Who Wish Me Dead starring Angelina Jolie, Clint Eastwood’s new movie Cry MachoJudas and the Black Messiah starring LaKeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya, and a few other new Warner Bros. movies. For many of these movies, this is the first look we’ve gotten, even if it’s a brief one.

This comes a day after news of an accelerated release date for the latest Godzilla movie. Warner Bros pushed the release to March 26th, up from its previous release date of May 21st.

Deadline reported last Friday that Warner Bros and financier Legendary, which owns a majority of the movie, avoided a legal battle over the former’s decision to take its entire 2021 slate and premiere it simultaneously on its streaming service HBO Max. Warner blocked a $200M offer from Netflix to be the one to premiere the film.

Still unsettled is whether Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is released the same way. That arrangement is still being hashed out between WarnerMedia and Legendary. Dune is currently scheduled to be released on October 1st.

The official Godzilla vs. Kong synopsis: reads thusly: Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash in a spectacular battle for the ages. As a squadron embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, a conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever. Fun!

Moving in the opposite direction, the studio recently moved The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark from March 12th to September 24th.
