Like the rest of us, the ’90s are having a rough year.

More than one planned reboot of a beloved 1990s movie and television shows have ended before they began. Back in January, Paramount backed out of producing animated series based on both Garfield and Friends and Ren & Stimpy. Even worse, a rebooted Buffy the Vampire Slayer series that had everyone, including star Sarah Michelle Gellar, excited to return to Sunnydale, was canned last month by Hulu/20th Television.

But at least ’90s kids still had that Clueless sequel series to look forward to…until now.

On Thursday, Peacock announced that it was not moving forward with the series it announced exactly one year ago. That Clueless would have caught up with a middle-aged Cher Horowitz, still played by Alicia Silverstone. Pop Culture Junkie wrote about the Clueless remake last year.

The series would have featured Silverstone and director/writer Amy Heckerling as Executive Producer, scripts by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and would have been a co-production of Paramount Pictures, which released the original, and Universal Television, and the show was to stream on Peacock.

For all this ’90s-era doom and gloom, it should be noted that Clueless 2.0 hasn’t officially been declared dead yet. The Paramount half of the production team is still interested in the project and will shop it around to other streamers. But Universal pulling out is not good news for the show’s future odds.

What might improve those odds? Perhaps if Paul Rudd were to commit to return, even for an episode (as if he would!) we might see another streamer become very attached to the project.
