In April 2024, Pop Culture Junkie reported that Lionsgate, in conjunction with Blumhouse, would reboot one of the most profitable films of all time, The Blair Witch Project. Less than two weeks later, PCJ reported on the backlash that occurred when the movie’s creators and stars asked via social media to be included in the project.

Now, almost exactly two years later, we can tell you that Lionsgate and Blumhouse have agreed to do just that. Universal/Blumhouse announced executive producer positions in the reboot for original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, screenwriter Eduardo Sánchez, writer/director Daniel Myrick and producer Gregg Hale.

The Blair Witch Project, released 1999, was made for $35,000 but took in $248 million dollars, making it one of the most profitable films ever made. The reboot was announced at 2024’s CinemaCon, which was the first time the original Blair Witch team heard of the project.

Leonard, Williams and Heather Donohue, the originals leads, collaborated on a public statement asking for “retroactive and future residual payments, an opportunity to provide “meaningful consultation” on any future Blair Witch projects and they also ask that the studio to start a $60,000 grant for aspiring filmmakers,” and for compensation “equivalent to the sum that would’ve been allotted through SAG-AFTRA, had we had proper union or legal representation when the film was made.”

After the film’s release, the actors sold their ownership points in the film for $300,000 dollars each, but then had to sue the Artisan Entertainment, which distributed the film, saying “because we used our real names in the first film, the studio claimed copyright. We had to take them to federal court to win OUR NAMES back.”

In another post, production designer Ben Rock said the original crew had been “overlooked” and suggested that given the two sequels failed to find an audience, anyone rebooting the film should involve the film’s creators for another attempt.

Plot and casting details for the reboot haven’t been divulged yet, but Dylan Clark will direct and James Wan of Atomic Monster is partnering with Blumhouse to produce. Back in 2024, Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group told CinemaCon attendees that “we are thrilled to kick this partnership off with a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.”
