The ‘gators got him. Or did they?

Julia Garner will star in an Apple TV+ true crime drama drawn from a novel covering a Florida murder case, “set against a backdrop of sex and murder in the Florida panhandle.” Directed by Supergirl‘s Craig Gillespie, Guilty Creatures tells the tale of the mysterious death of Mike Williams, who disappeared after hunting near Lake Seminole in Florida.

The series is based on Mikita Brottman’s book Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, published by Simon & Schuster in 2024. Williams went duck hunting in December of 2000 and never came home again. After a search turned up nothing, it was assumed his body was eaten by alligators. But then Mike’s wife Denise ended up marrying one of the couple’s friends, Brian Winchester, breaking up his marriage to his wife Kathy. Both couples had been very active in their Baptist church, so the marriage and eventual resolution of Mike’s murder shocked at least some people in their community.

According to Simon and Schuster’s site featuring the book, it’s been called a true “psychological thriller as intricately organized as a Hitchcock movie.”

Garner also serves as executive producer along with Stuart Zicherman, who is also the showrunner. Gillespie will direct from a script adapted by Sarah DeLappe (Bodies Bodies Bodies).

Garner is best known for her work on the Netflix series Ozark, and last year starred in Weapons and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. She’ll next be seen in The Altruists on Netflix and is currently in production on the Amazon MGM film Tyrant opposite Charlize Theron.

No production start date (nor release date) has been set as of this time, and there are no further casting announcements yet.
