Drugs, car chases, mistaken identity, talking cats and more drugs fuel the action in The Wrong Girls, due in theaters next month.

The Wrong Girls is a female stoner buddy movie along the lines of Harold and Kumar or The Pineapple Express mixed with a the feminine energy found in comedies like Drive-Away Dolls, Joy Ride, and One of Them Days. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat star as Frankie and Molly, two broke weed aficionados who stumble upon what seems like the answer to a prayer: a briefcase full of vials of an experimental drug.

“I don’t think we can sell these,” Molly says. “We don’t even know what they do.”
“Have I ever led you astray?” asks Frankie. As Molly hems and haws, Frankie clinks her vial against Molly’s. “Cheers!” she says.

What follows is a one-of-a-kind trip, as the girls (and their two cats, voiced by Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani) find themselves targets by people in both the legitimate and illegitimate drug trade. Kate McKinnon and Geena Davis star as scientists and Lakeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox and Chris Estrada also star. Dylan Meyer (Moxie) directs from her own script.

“I don’t think there’s a single stoner female buddy movie,” Meyer said in a Q&A included in the film’s press notes, citing movies like Repo Man, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and The Big Lebowski as being influential. “I really related to The Dude, and I realized there was a lack of female characters like that. But I didn’t want to make a girl movie that was doing an impression of boy movies. I wanted to make a movie that felt true to the people that were in it and didn’t follow traditional comedic formula because it had to be truly itself.”

Neon is distributing the film, which was produced by Stewart, Meyer, Rogen and Evan Goldberg, among others. The Wrong Girls trips into theaters on August 14th.
