Some Derry girls are going abroad.

20th Television and FX have won the rights to Lisa McGee’s next project, a series titled Wildwood. This will mark the first series set outside of Ireland for McGee, who created the series Derry Girls, a comedy about a group of Northern Irish teens in the 1990s. McGee also created the series How to Get to Heaven from Belfast which debuted earlier this year. Both are available on Netflix.

While not a sequel to Derry Girls, Wildwood is about a group of Irish lasses. The show is set in the summer of 2000 and follows a group of college girls from Ireland who “descend on the neon playground that is Wildwood, New Jersey. They’ve no money, no visas, no plan, no clue,” according to the show’s official description.

Derry Girls became the UK’s Channel 4’s biggest comedy launch in more than a decade when it premiered in 2018. It ran for three seasons, winning BAFTA Awards, International Emmy Awards, and Irish Film and Television Awards for Best Comedy. McGee’s credits also include creating or co-creating The Deceived, London Irish, and Raw and has written for Being Human and The White Queen.

Wildwood was the subject of an intense bidding war, according to Deadline, and is now in the development phase, with McGee serving as both creator and executive producer.

 Casting details and a production timeline for Wildwood have yet to be announced.
