Shauna has the Back-in-America Blues and has found the cure is watching one horror or thriller film per day, and she and Olivia go down memory lane remembering the best and worst flicks from inconsistent filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. Both Junkies agree that the real horror show these days is called “the news,” including the Cornell 7 case, which then leads to this episode’s topic: Feminist Rage Anthems. Women have always had reason to protest, and sometimes they even sang about it, in songs dating back to the suffragist movement of the 1910s and ’20s, to the civil rights protest songs of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, and beyond. Olivia and Shauna cover all the eras, genres, songs, and singers…from Helen Reddy singing “I Am Woman” to country music rebels like The Chicks, to the Riot Grrls of the 1990s, and wrap up with the female icons of today like Beyoncé, Halsey, and Kesha. This episode does briefly deal with sexual assault and lynchings, so please be advised that some of the discussion may be triggering. The Junkies honor the women who lend their voices and their words in order to demand change and “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.”
