‘Crazy’ Times Two: Rachel Bloom Teams with ‘Ex-Girlfriend’ Co-Creator for ‘Badass’ New Spy Comedy for Hulu
Rachel Bloom’s new show will have her fans seeing double.
Bloom is retiming with her Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-collaborator Aline Brosh McKenna to create Badass (and Her Sister), a new comedy for Hulu and ABC Signature.
Badass will revolve around a super cool spy, played by Bloom, who tires of her life of exotic espionage and goes to live with her pushover twin sister (also played by Bloom). Together they learn what it really means to be a badass.
In addition to writing and executive producing, Bloom and Brosh McKenna will also serve as co-showrunners.
Emmy and Golden Globe winner Bloom and Brosh McKenna are best known as the co-creators of CW’s musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which starred Bloom and aired for four seasons, from 2015-2019.
This is a busy time for Bloom, who was recently named the female lead in Reboot, Hulu’s comedy pilot from Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan. Her book, I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are was released by Grand Central Publishing in 2020.
Brosh McKenna is reportedly directing her first film, Your Place Or Mine, a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. She served as showrunner on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and directed the finale episodes of all four seasons. Her other feature writing credits include 27 Dresses, Morning Glory and We Bought a Zoo.
There’s no word if this project will have any musical numbers. Bloom, along with the late Adam Schlesinger won one Emmy and were nominated for several more for songs they wrote for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Schlesinger died in 2019 from complications related to Covid-19. The series followed Bloom as Rebecca Bunch, a high-powered lawyer who abandons her former life to pursue a boy she was in love with as a teenager.
