Can ‘The Witches’ Save Halloween?
Halloween is certainly a pop culture high holy day, and the question of how – or even if – we will celebrate weighs heavy on the mind in these uncertain times.
Will your community allow trick-or-treating? If they do, should you participate? Should you have a Halloween party? Will Home Depot stock more of those awesome 12-foot skeletons everyone is coveting? Will we make it through spooky season without Halloween-themed Peeps?
We can’t answer those questions for you, although we feel that we can probably live without Peeps. But we still want to know: how can we celebrate responsibly?
As always, streaming comes to the rescue. Many services offer up Halloween movie marathons, and in the case of ‘The Witches’, you can now see a brand new movie from your couch when it premieres on HBO Max on October 22nd.
Originally planned for a wide theatrical release, thanks to our least favorite Pandemic ‘The Witches’ is going direct to streaming nationally, though it will still get an international theatrical release.
Based on a Roald Dahl story, ‘The Witches’ stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci, as well as the voice of Chris Rock.
A coven of witches (natch) who really, really, don’t like kids descends on a fancy hotel with a diabolical plan to turn every kid into a mouse, because that would make things better. Somehow. Oh, and Hathaway dons some Joker-inspired lipstick and a weird Teutonic accent.
A movie based on the book was first made in 1990 and starred Anjelica Huston, but had anemic box office results despite good reviews.
