Marvel’s Monstrous Halloween Special Will Be Directed by ‘The Batman’ Composer Michael Giacchino
Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino is putting down the baton and picking up the megaphone.
Giacchino will direct Marvel’s as-yet-untitled Halloween special, which will start production later this month in Atlanta. Not much is known about the project, though some sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that it will be based on the Marvel comic character Werewolf By Night, though you can expect the title to change by the time the special airs on Disney+ later this year.
Gael Garcia Bernal (Station Eleven) and Laura Donnelly (The Nevers) will star in the one-hour story, with sources believing that Bernal’s character is a werewolf. The Werewolf by Night nickname actually applies to two different Marvel Comics characters; the first was Jack Russell back in the 1970s and more recently new character Jack Gomez got that nickname in a four-part mini-series released in 2020.
There’s distinct tie-in possibilities with future Marvel television projects, as issue #32 of the Werewolf by Night comic series features the first appearance from Moon Knight, a character that will soon get his own Marvel television show. Music is an important part of the story, as it allows the character to control his transformation into a werewolf.
Giacchino, who has composed for Pixar (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Inside Out and more) and J.J. Abrams (Lost, the Star Trek reboot), has also worked on many Marvel films, including 2016’s Doctor Strange, and the score for the Tom Holland trilogy of Spider-Man movies. He’s also the composer for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
Giacchino is not known for directing, but he has lensed a few projects. In 2018, he directed, wrote, and scored the short film Monster Challenge, and later directed a Star Trek short in 2019. It’s currently unknown if Giacchino will also handle the special’s score.
