John Hurwitz wishes the new Karate Kid movie well, but says it’s not part of his Cobra Kai Universe.

Hurwitz, who co-created the hit show that is a spinoff of the original Karate Kid movie trilogy, tweeted that he and his cast are not part of the movie, recently announced to be part of Sony’s 2024 slate of releases.

“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” Hurwitz tweeted.

Sony Pictures recently released their 2023-2024 theatrical schedule, which heralded a new Karate Kid film slated to open on June 7th, 2024. Currently there are no stars or directors attached to the film and as Hurwitz stated, he is not involved in the project.

Cobra Kai was developed for YouTube Red by Sony as a direct sequel to the original Karate Kid films by Robert Mark Kamen. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprised and expanded their roles of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the original films, the first of which came out in 1984.

After two seasons on YouTube Red, the series moved to Netflix where it has aired for three additional seasons. Hurwitz and his creative team of Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg have been very vocal about expanding their IP with spinoff shows and a sixth season of Cobra Kai is all but confirmed.

 “There’s no official response to [whether or not there will be a Season Six], except we have lots of ideas. There’s time and places to make official things, we’re not at that place right now.” Yeah. More Cobra Kai is a safe bet,” Schlossberg told Games Radar.

“We do have a place where it’s all going, but that doesn’t mean the world has to stop there,” Hurwitz said to Total Film. “We have lots of ideas of continuing [the universe] and keeping the Karate Kid vibes going through other stories and other shows and different formats for that.”
