Trailer News #1: Sony’s Sequel To ‘Searching’ Sees Teen Tracking ‘Missing’ Mom On Social Media
It’s small screens on the big screen again as Sony shows off its first trailer for Missing.
The movie, a sequel of sorts to 2018’s Searching, once again shows someone using the power of the internet to find a lost loved one. In Searching, John Cho starred as a David Kim, a father desperate to track down his teenage daughter. In Missing, Storm Reid (Euphoria, The Invisible Man) stars as a teen who investigates the disappearance of her mother.
Searching had a budget under $1 million dollars, and the film played out entirely on computer and smartphone screens. The return on investment was great, as the film earned over $75 million at the global box office, so the creative team behind that film have gotten back together for Missing, which will be presented in the same way as Searching was.
Reid plays June, a teen who starts sleuthing after her mother Grace (Nia Long) never returns from a vacation to Colombia with her new boyfriend Kevin (Ken Leung.) Frustrated the non-responsiveness of the authorities, the recent high school graduate takes the hunt into her own hands.
After officials try to fob her off saying, “the best thing you can do to help us is just wait by your phone,” June does just that, using apps like TaskRabbit and TikTok in her search. The two movies are connected as June did a deep dive on Searching’s Margot Kim case. She goes on to discover shocking secrets: Kevin is revealed to be more than he initially let on–as is Grace.
Missing reunites Searching co-writers Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian for the story. They also penned the 2020 Hulu feature Run, which starred Sarah Paulson. This time around, the screenplay is written by Nick Johnson and Will Merrick, who also took over from Chaganty as directors.
Missing is due in theaters on January 20th, 2023.
