Get ready for more Marvel (but not necessarily MCU) content on the small screen.

This isn’t news about a new slate of programs on Disney+ though. Sony and Prime Video are developing multiple live-action shows based on the Marvel characters like Spider-Man, which are currently (mostly) controlled by Sony.

First up is Silk: Spider Society, featuring Spider-Verse character Cindy Moon. Angela Kang, former showrunner for The Walking Dead, will oversee the production as part of a new multi-year overall television deal she has signed with Amazon. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also producing the project. 

In the comics, Cindy Moon is a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk. The character was created for Marvel comics by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. The character as featured in the MCU was played by Tiffany Espenson.

There will be more, of course, as Sony controls over 900 Marvel characters from an arrangement with the studio that pre-dates Disney’s acquisition of Marvel. Sony also signed a massive deal with Lord and Miller in 2019. The duo will exec produce Sony’s suite of series with Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal.

“We can’t wait to bring the adventures of Cindy Moon to life, thanks to the creative dream team of Chris and Phil, Angela and Amy, along with our partners at Marvel and Amazon,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, said in a statement. “We know this exciting series with new and never-before-seen characters and storylines will wow audiences watching first on linear MGM+ and then around the world on Prime Video.”

Sony released two different Spider-Man live-action film series in the past before partnering with Marvel Studios to bring the character to the MCU in the films starring Tom Holland. Sony was the studio behind Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Academy Award for best animated film in 2019. Two sequels to that film are currently in the works. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse appears in theaters in June 2023.

Sony has also released the live-action films Venom and its sequel Let There Be Carnage starring Tom Hardy, as well as Morbius starring Jared Leto. A third Venom film is currently in development, while Sony is also at work on film versions of characters like Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web.

It is unknown at this time which other Marvel characters will be featured in the Amazon show, which will also be available to stream on MGMPlus (formerly Epix.) The studio has not announced a projected release date for the show yet.
