Gunning For The Future: DC Studios Head James Gunn Reveals Its Next Chapter Is All About ‘Gods And Monsters’
For the past few months, all the news about the DCEU was mostly about projects that were either cancelled or delayed, but that has changed.
Today, co-head of DC Studios James Gunn released a video outlining ten new projects, which together make up the next phase of film and television projects featuring DC characters, which they are dubbing their Chapter 1, aka “Gods and Monsters.”
Among the projects are new films featuring top tier heroes like Superman, Batman and Supergirl, as well as new faces, like the WildStorm characters. On the television side, series featuring Amanda Waller, Booster Gold, and the Green Lanterns will run alongside series with brand new characters like the Creature Commandoes and the residents of Themyscira.
“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters — which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman — and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know,” explained Gunn. He also said he plans to have the same actors portray characters in both live-action and animated projects.
Here are the projects that Gunn announced today.
DC movies
Superman: Legacy – written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11th, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, and will not star Henry Cavill.
The Authority – WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right.
The Brave and the Bold – the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – this science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing.
Swamp Thing – the film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.
The Batman – Part II — the film will star Robert Pattinson and will hit theaters on October 3rd, 2025.
DC HBO TV series
Creature Commandos — a seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners; Gunn wrote all the episodes of the first season.
Waller — starring Viola Davis, this series is a Peacemaker spinoff and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural).
Booster Gold — Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day.
Lanterns — this enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery. Gunn likened this to True Detective with two space cops.
Paradise Lost — set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women.
Gunn told fans that they could expect more projects than what was announced Tuesday. Gunn assembled a group of writers he admired to help him draft the slate of projects. Among them were The Martian scribe Drew Goddard, The Flash writer Christina Hodson, Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater, Watchmen writer Christal Henry and famed comic book writer Tom King.
Gunn also referenced the DC projects coming up this year, such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “We’ve gotten very lucky for the next four projects,” he said in the video, but added that Chapter 1 is “the true beginning of the DCU.”
