All That Jazz: Season 2 Of ‘Schmigadoon!’ Takes The Cast Into The Gritty, Edgy, World of 70s Musicals
Goodbye Schmigadoon!, hello Schmicago!
Season 2 of the Apple TV+ musical comedy relocates its singing lovebirds from the colorful sweetness of Schmigadoon to the dark, gritty world of 60s and 70s musicals.
The second season of the Emmy award-winning musical comedy series, starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key, premieres Wednesday, April 5th. Apple TV will drop the first two episodes of its six-episode second season that day, followed by new episodes every Wednesday.
The show comes from co-creators Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, who also write for the show. All of the songs have been written by Paul, including the Emmy winning “Corn Puddin.”
The second season picks up a while after the first concluded. Having found true love in the town of Schmigadoon, Josh (Key) and Melissa (Strong) are now keenly feeling a lack of magic in their mundane lives. While looking to return to Schmigadoon, they find themselves instead in Schmicago, in the reimagined world of ’60s and ’70s musicals.
This season will feature new original songs, and Key and Strong will be joined by new series regulars Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Patrick Page (The Gilded Age).
The returning season one cast will be playing new roles, including Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil (who once played Billy Flynn in Broadway’s Chicago), Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Aaron Tveit and Martin Short, who appears to be the only Schmigadoonian reprising his season one role (as a leprechaun.)
Schmigadoon! also earned AFI awards and a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for star Kristin Chenoweth. The complete first season of Schmigadoon! is now streaming on Apple TV+.
