Roll Call: Jon Bernthal Will Reprise His ‘Punisher’ Role In Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Series, But Two Characters May Not Return
Hero, meet anti-hero.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Jon Bernthal is reprising the role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, for the the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. This is the first time Bernthal (or anyone) has portrayed the character since Netflix’s Punisher series was cancelled in 2019.
Bernthal joins Charlie Cox as Daredevil/Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin/Wilson Fisk in the series, along with Michael Gandolfini, Sandrine Holt and Margarita Levieva.
Daredevil: Born Again is written and and executive producerd by Matt Corman and Chris Ord. The show is expected to debut in the spring of 2024.
But there are two Netflix actors who have not been asked to reprise their characters. Per THR, two other prominent cast members “are not expected to return.” The two stars mentioned are Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, who co-starred in the original Netflix series as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, respectively.
According to the report, neither actor is on the roll call for the upcoming Marvel Studios series, but it’s unclear if the roles will be re-cast or written out completely. Marvel has yet to officially confirm any of this news directly.
The story behind Born Again comes from a landmark Daredevil storyline published in 1986, written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzuchelli, although Marvel’s show will deviate from that plot, although by how much is unclear. The Punisher made no appearance in the comic story, which focused on Daredevil versus the Kingpin.
Bernthal first played the grieving father-turned-vigilante on Netflix’s version of Daredevil during 2016’s second season. He went on to headline his own series for Netflix, playing the character for two seasons of The Punisher, which ran from 2017-19.
