Say It Three Times: Jenna Ortega, Goth’s ‘It Girl’ In Negotiations For Possible ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Lead
Jenna Ortega may work with Tim Burton again.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star of Wednesday is in negotiations to star in the long-delayed sequel to Burton’s Beetlejuice – if it actually happens.
THR’s sources say that Ortega is being sought to star as the daughter of Winona Ryder’s character Lydia from the 1988 original. They also report that if it happens, the production on the long-gestating sequel is planned to begin in May or June this year, with Tim Burton expected to direct and Michael Keaton set to return as the title character.
The film will reportedly be written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who are the showrunners of the hit Netflix series, where Burton is also an executive producer and is one of the key directors.
The original film, which also starred Catherine O’Hara, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin and was directed by Barry Sonnenfield, was a big hit at the box office and won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. A sequel to the project has been in development since 1990. Though there hasn’t yet been a cinematic sequel, the show spawned a popular children’s cartoon as well as a Broadway musical, which debuted in 2018 and was nominated for eight Tony Awards.
Ortega is having a good year; in addition to her heralded run on Wednesday, the star is headlining Scream VI, the latest film in the slasher franchise, which opened Friday only in theaters.
There’s no word on whether Ryder will reprise her role, and Warner Bros. and Ortega’s representatives have not commented on the report, so keep that in mind before getting too excited.
