Edgar Wright Teams Up With Netflix To Bring ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Anime Series To The Small Screen
It’s time to fall in lesbians…er, in love, with Scott Pilgrim all over again.
Netflix has developed a Scott Pilgrim anime series based on the graphic novels from which the 2010 movie was made. Edgar Wright, who directed and co-wrote Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, will executive produce the series alongside Nira Park.
Every member of the movie’s main cast is returning to voice their characters in the series. Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flower) will reprise their roles. Other returning cast members include Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman and Ellen Wong.
Bryan Lee O’Malley, who created the “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series, will co-write and executive produce the anime version along with BenDavid Grabinski. The pair will also serve as co-showrunners.
Science SARU will provide the animation. Eunyoung Choi of Science SARU will executive produce with Abel Gongora onboard to direct.
Scott Pilgrim the graphic novel was published by Oni Press in six volumes from 2004 and 2010, and focused on slacker Scott Pilgrim, who was in a garage band called Sex Bob-omb. Wright’s film told the story of Pilgrim battling the seven previous loves of Ramona Flowers. Though Scott Pilgrim vs. the World failed at the box office, it became a cult hit.
“One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim,” Wright said in a statement. “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now … Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski, have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also … well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”
