Working Blue: ‘Avatar’ Screenwriter Josh Friedman To Rewrite Script For Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’
Josh Friedman will now be putting words in the mouths of the Fantastic Four.
Marvel Studios has enlisted Josh Friedman (Avatar: The Way of Water; War of the Worlds) to write a new script for its highly-anticipated Fantastic Four, which is still scheduled to debut on February 14th, 2025, kicking off Phase 6 of the action-hero adventures. Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer wrote the previous draft of the script.
Friedman is perhaps best known for developing the TNT series Snowpiercer, which was based on the popular Bong Joon Ho film. He also created the series Foundation and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for Apple and Fox respectively.
Matt Shakman (WandaVision; Game of Thrones) is still directing, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will produce. Plot details and casting choices are still unknown for the film, which will mark the Fantastic Four team’s official entry into the MCU.
Fantastic Four was the heroic team that introduced readers, and rest of the the world, to Marvel Comics, beginning the medium’s Marvel Age, as the comics giant dubbed it in the 1960s. The four, consisting of scientist Reed Richards, his best friend Ben Grimm, his girlfriend Sue Storm and her hot-headed brother, Johnny, gain powers after they are exposed to cosmic radiation and develop superpowers.
That idea of the dysfunctional team, which still operated as a family unit, helped launch what became known as “the Marvel revolution,” where superhero comics emphasized flawed protagonists that explored their human side, resolving family, dating and even financial challenges while using their powers to protect the public from an unhinged roster of supervillains.
The Fantastic Four characters have appeared in four previous films: two 20th Century Fox movies from 2005 and 2007 that were directed by Tim Story, a 2015 flop directed by Josh Trank and an unreleased 1994 movie directed by Roger Corman that was made for Constantin Film solely to maintain film rights.
