Where are the Avengers?

That’s the question the newspaper headlines are asking in the new trailer for Marvel’s Secret Invasion series, coming in June to Disney+.

In lieu of Thor, Captain Marvel, the Hulk, etc., Secret Invasion sends Nick Fury, played with fatigued intensity by Samuel L. Jackson, to the frontlines of Earth’s war against the Skrulls. The former SHIELD director came back to Earth to deal with a problem that’s been quietly behind various multiversal calamities and wars between secret cities.

With the other MCU heroes caught up in their own problems, it falls to Fury and his longtime right hand Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) to dig into what’s been going on with the Skrulls. Fury first met the race of shapeshifting aliens in the 1980s, as chronicled in Captain Marvel.

Returning for the series are Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, aka War Machine and Ben Mendelsohn, who played Talos in Captain Marvel. Secret Invasion will also introduce Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman and Kingsley Ben-Adir to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ben-Adir is set to play one of the main villains in the show, and Clarke will play G’iah, the now grown-up daughter of Talos.

Secret Invasion marks the full-fledged return of Nick Fury to the MCU. Fury was last featured in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, although in that film, “Nick Fury” was revealed to be a shape-shifting Skrull; the real Fury was shown to be working covertly somewhere in outer space.

Secret Invasion is based on the 2008 comic book event by Brian Michael Bendis and Lenil Francis Yu. It was previously adapted for television for the second season of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The Disney+ series represents the third installment in Marvel’s Phase Five, which kicked off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February and will be followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May. Other projects on the horizon include the Disney+ series Echo and Season 2 of Loki, as well as The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel.

Secret Invasion was created by Kyle Bradstreet, who also serves as showrunner. The show will be a six-episode miniseries when it debuts June 21st on Disney+.
