A Brand New Mission: Paramount+ Is Adapting A New ‘Galaxy Quest’ Series Based On The 1999 Hit
Another Galaxy Quest mission is in the works at Paramount.
Paramount+ and Paramount Television Studios are in the early stages of adapting the cult classic comedy film into a television show. At this time, the only member of the creative team officially attached is Mark Johnson, who produced the original film and would serve as an executive producer on the potential series.
Based on the 1999 Dreamworks film about a motley crew of actors from a canceled sci-fi TV show who end up in outer space for real, the original starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni.
Amazon was in the process of creating a revival series featuring the original cast back in 2015, but the project was tabled due to the scheduling difficulties and the death of Rickman in 2016.
Amazon’s Galaxy Quest update never went beyond the development stages, leaving the title dormant for the past few years. Now, Paramount TV Studios is looking for a writer to work with Johnson to come up with an idea to resurrect the feature for Paramount+, which is also the home of the Star Trek franchise, which Galaxy Quest lovingly spoofs.
The film was financially successful upon its release, earning a little over $90 million at the box office against a reported budget of $45 million. It was well-received by critics as well, but gained a more significant following over the years. It has been particularly praised by Trekkies, who voted it one of the best Star Trek films of all time in 2013.
