Only people of a certain age will recall NBC’s nature documentary show Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

The program, lampooned by sketch comedy shows of the day, featured zoologist Marlin Perkins and his intrepid assistant Jim Fowler, who was given the uneviable task of wrangling wild critters at Perkins’ behest while he watched at a safe remove. Now, exactly 60 years after the original show premiered, the network that spawned it has plans to bring it back.

Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild premieres Saturday, October 7th on NBC’s “The More You Know” programming block, and will also be available on NBC.com and NBC VOD. The show will be produced by Hearst and hosted by wildlife expert and Wild Kingdom alum Peter Gros, who first appeared on a version of the long-running series back in 1985.

Gros appeared on the show alongside then-host Fowler, who was promoted after Perkins’ departure from the program. Gros’ co-host is wildlife ecologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, a National Geographic Explorer and research faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who will showcase the efforts taking place to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom has actually been on the air for many of the past 60 years. It debuted on NBC in 1963, then went into syndication in 1971. After that, Mutual of Omaha’s Spirit of Adventure, which retained hosts Gros and Fowler, debuted in 1987 on ABC, where it had a two-year run. A revival aired from 2002 to 2011, ultimately ending up on the Animal Planet network. It then moved to the internet, with a webisode incarnation streaming on YouTube from 2013 to 2018.

“This is a well-known, enduring franchise that’s literally part of television history,” Hearst Media Production Group president Frank Biancuzzo said in a statement. “Together with Mutual of Omaha and NBC, we’re looking forward to creating new and memorable wildlife adventures.”

“With its premiere in 1963, ‘Wild Kingdom’ pioneered the nature adventure genre, setting the standard for today’s wildlife programming,” added Jennifer Wulf, vice president of brand marketing for Mutual of Omaha said in a statement. “Through our partnership with HMPG, we are excited to remain at the forefront of compelling wildlife conservation efforts and success stories.”
