No Mystery Here: ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Earns a Fourth Season By Setting a 2023 Hulu Viewing Record
Which of the Pickwick Triplets did it?
Even if we knew, we wouldn’t spoil Wednesday’s finale of Only Murders in the Building – although a sizable number of Hulu subscribers already saw it. The mystery/comedy’s season 3 had the most viewed 2023 finale on Hulu, based on views after its first day streaming. (A view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.)
Hulu released the results but as usual, it wouldn’t provide details but did declare that the series remains its most watched original comedy ever. And even before everyone had viewed the finale, Hulu announced the renewal – unsurprising as the show has garned great reviews, award nominations and wins, and is continually ranked in the streamer’s Top 15 programs and has ranked on Nielsen’s Top 10 original series chart since its launch. The show set another record this year; on the day season 3 premiered, the series had the most views of any scripted Hulu Original in 2023.
Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger (again, no spoilers!) but also dropped a few hints that the show might explore other locations besides the city that is the home of the titular building, The Arconia. (This might be considered a spoiler, if only a speculative one.)
Several cast members found themselves looking westward in the S3 finale, which led some to wonder if season 4 might be shot in Los Angeles.
Only Murders in the Building co-creator John Hoffman confirmed that it’s a definite possibility. He told Deadline that “We are gonna see if there’s a definite touch of Los Angeles in small doses.”
Season 3 found the podcasters/detectives played by Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez solving the mystery of a death behind the scenes of a Broadway show. The OMITB showrunners brought in Tony- and Oscar-winning songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are behind Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman and La La Land, to craft some of the memorable numbers performed this season, including the addictive “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?”, a tongue-twisting patter song that Martin’s character repeatedly struggles to sing.
There are no indications that season 4 will also be heavy on the toe-tappers though; Hoffman has indicated that the gang might be feeling more introspective. “Now the trio is in a situation where with everyone they get involved they wonder, ‘what have I done? Have I gotten involved with someone nefarious and murderous, potentially?'” he told Deadline.
