In a world where time travel, multiple universes, and regeneration exist, you may die, but you’re never really gone.

And that’s why David Tennant, who ended his run as the Tenth Doctor years ago, can now return as the 14th Doctor Who on a series of specials airing on the BBC, as per usual, in Britain, and coming to Disney+ in the US.

Tennant’s original run as the Tenth Doctor ended in 2010 with a similar series of specials, in which he said farewell to his friends on Earth and on many other worlds, before being regenerated into a new Doctor, in the form of Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor. Tennant only once reprised his role ten years to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary alongside Smith in The Day of the Doctor special.

In another welcome return, one of Ten’s estimable companions makes her return, hopefully to have a great wrong committed against her righted. Ten may have the chance to undo one of his most controversial actions: wiping the mind of Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), making her forget all her adventures in time and space as well as the extraordinary powers she gained in her last adventure; all done in order to protect those powers from destroying her.

The first of three specials, The Star Beast, will premiere November 25th, followed by Wild Blue Yonder on December 2nd and The Giggle on December 9th. All will air on Disney+ globally, except in the program’s home country, the UK, where BBC will broadcast them.

Restoring Donna to her badass former self may be necessary, as Ten will need her to fight a new – or is it old? – foe. The two face off with The Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris), whom Donna seems to recognize -perhaps from a battle with the Doctor long, long ago. Donna gets to stand alongside the Doctor again, but at what cost?

Don’t get too attached to Ten, or Fourteen for that matter. Tennant’s return will only last through these specials, and when the new season begins in 2024, The Doctor will be played by Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Barbie) who will be the Fifteenth Doctor.

Additional new cast includes Yasmin Finney as Rose Temple-Noble, Miriam Margolyes as the voice of the Meep and Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, as well as returning characters Jacqueline King as Sylvia Noble, Karl Collins as Shaun Temple, and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.
