Jimmy Kimmel had to make it weird.

On his Tuesday night show, Kimmel had the honor of being the first to announce the winner of People Magazine’s annual Sexiest Man Alive. But before he did, he tried to make the audience guess who won, 20 Questions-style.

Kimmel led a very unsuccessful game with the audience who asked questions like whether he has a podcast, or if the SMA was sexier than Kimmel. (The answer was “no,” by the way.) After enduring what he called “the worst batch of questions ever,” Kimmel began offering up rather obvious clues until it was finally revealed to be actor Patrick Dempsey.

After the big announcement, the Enchanted star came out and sat with Kimmel who asked Dempsey why it took so long for this to happen.

“I don’t know, I’m just happy they made a decision and it’s me this year,” Dempsey said. “I’m very grateful.”

The 57-year-old Dempsey said that he had to fast and work out to prepare for the photo shoot that was involved with the honor, which he said was all very awkward given the amount of secrecy surrounding the news.

The former Grey’s Anatomy heartthrob is busy making movies now, with two films coming out yet this year, Eli Roth’s holiday horror film Thanksgiving and the biopic Ferrari.

“It’s actually my favorite movie I’ve ever been a part of,” Dempsey said of Ferrari. “I think it’s absolutely beautiful.”
