Astronauts vs Cosmonauts: In ‘I.S.S.’ Russian and US Astronauts See WWIII Break Out on Earth, and on the Station
In space, no one can hear you scream as you watch the destruction of your home planet.
That’s the horrifying premise behind Bleecker Street’s upcoming thriller I.S.S., directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) and starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Messina (Birds of Prey). The script is from Nick Shafir.
Set in the near future, the film follows a crew of American astronauts (DeBose, Messina and John Gallagher Jr.) as they meet up with their Russian counterparts (played by Masha Mashkova, Pilou Asbaek and Costa Ronin) aboard the International Space Station.
The mission is running smoothly and the atmosphere between the two groups of station-dwellers is congenial, until the unthinkable happens. From their vantage point orbiting the Earth, they witness the beginnings of a war, with entire countries seemingly engulfed in flames.
The American faction gets a directive from mission control to take control of the space station – by any means necessary. The detente between the Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts now over, everyone must battle to survive, even if there is no returning to Earth afterwards.
I.S.S. will lift off in theaters on January 19th, 2024.
