The days turn to weeks and then to years – in real life and in zombie movie franchises.

A sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later is going into productions at Sony Pictures, after the studio won the rights to that sequel, part of a planned trilogy from director Danny Boyle (Pistol, Yesterday) and writer Alex Garland (Men, Civil War). Fox Searchlight produced the original.

Boyle and Garland will collaborate on the new film, and Oscar-nominee Cillian Murphy will also return, though for now his involvement will be limited to an executive-producer credit. Whether his character, who survived the first movie, will return is unknown at this time.

28 Years will be the first of two, or possibly three films, according to Deadline, but Boyle will only direct the first film, with a new, as-yet unnamed director taking over after that.

28 Weeks Later, which followed the 2002 film, came out in 2007 and was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadilla. It was a standalone film, sharing no character continuity with 28 Days Later. Boyle and Garland were executive producers on that film, but had no other involvement.

The duo have long talked in the press about doing a sequel. At one point, the idea was a film called 28 Months Later, but since it’s been more than two decades since the first movie, 28 Years Later became the working – and probably only – title.

28 Days Later is credited with reigniting the zombie movie craze, leading to major films and television projects like The Walking DeadWorld War Z and Zombieland, and The Last of Us. The 2002 film grossed $82.7 million globally.
