Tyler Perry meant to help the hungry, not tie up traffic for hours, but long lines outside waiting to receive a Thanksgiving donation from Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta backed up roads in all directions for miles on Sunday.

In Perry’s latest act of charity, he offered 5000 families the chance to receive non-perishable food items along with a gift card, just in time for the upcoming holiday. Cars began lining up 15 hours before the intended start time of 8am Sunday.

The event, dubbed #TPSGiving, was supposed to last until noon, and materials advertising the event claimed that after 5000 donations were handed out, the event would be over. Donations were placed directly into the cars of those waiting.

It only took two hours to exhaust the supply, the studio said.

The line stretched for 5 miles south of downtown Atlanta, media outlets reported.

Emile Ikeda with Fox 5 news interviewed the first person in line, Jeanette Walton. She said the need is greater than ever before and acknowledged she’s never waited overnight for a food drive before. Walton says she has been helping out less fortunate family members to the point that now she herself is overburdened.

Perry has demonstrated his charitable nature several times this year. In April, he left $21,000 in tips to workers at one of his favorite area restaurants and he paid for the groceries of Atlanta seniors at 44 different supermarkets. And two years ago he paid off the layaway balances of customers at Atlanta-area Walmarts, to the tune of $500,000.
