Sausage Party was only the beginning.

The 2016 animated Seth Rogan-led raunch-fest was about horny, talking food that found out the ugly truth about humans – they eat food – and subsequently launched a revolution that was…pretty revolting.

Resisting the urge to produce a sequel to the film, which grossed $141.3 million worldwide against a budget of $19 million, Rogan instead took his appetizing (?) concept to the small screen. Back in 2022, Rogan announced his plans to make a Sausage Party series.

“Film used to be the superior art form to television, and we humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, Sausage Party,” Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg said in a joint statement, released in 2022.

The two continued, “but now that film is completely dead and TV is the forever-king of entertainment, we’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’s got all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now.”

The eight-part series begins with the comestibles continuing the food revolution against humans. While they achieve a sort of victory, they find they can’t totally rule the world – at least as long as there is inclement weather. As Frank the hot dog (Rogan) and Brenda the bun (Kristen Wiig) try to cope, they decide to take over a human named Jack (Will Forte) to do what they cannot.

The series will also feature Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton reprising their roles from the film. In addition to Forte, Natasha Rothwell, Sam Richardson and Yassir Lester are voicing new characters.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia premieres July 11th on Prime Video.
