Mighty Comeback: Ryan Reynolds is Bringing 80-Year-Old Rodent Superhero Back to Save Paramount’s Day
Mighty Mouse, who lives at the intersection of superheroes and cartoon animals, is making a comeback.
Ryan Reynolds is teaming with Free Guy writer Matt Lieberman to adapt Mighty Mouse into a feature film. Mighty Mouse, who first debuted in the 1942 animated short The Mouse of Tomorrow, was initially a parody of Superman with his super strength, flight, and penchant for operatic declarations like the famous catchphrase, “Here I come to save the day!”
Paramount Animation enlisted Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort, to join the project with Lieberman, who also wrote The Christmas Chronicles, and Scoob!. Brad Butler, vice president of animated features at Paramount, will be overseeing the film.
This is the latest attempt at reviving the character for the big screen; many projects in development. including one by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, the writers behind The Meg and RED, never came to fruition.
Details on the project have not been disclosed, but it could look like Reynolds and Lieberman’s take on Free Guy, imbuing a sense of humor into an action-adventure.
Maximum Effort is also working with Paramount on other projects currently in development, including an adaptation of the sci-fi novel Starter Villain by John Scalzi and Eloise, a big-screen version of the beloved family book series. In February, Maximum Effort announced it was renewing its deal with Paramount through 2026.
Paramount is the studio behind the Sonic the Hedgehog revival films released in the last few years, part of an overall industry trend of repurposing beloved family-movie characters, like Disney’s Lion King or Warner Bros’ Scoob!
