Cobra Kai was one of the nicest surprises in recent streaming memory: a reboot that blew fresh life into an old story, with plot twists that were unexpected. Now the first trailer for Season 3 has dropped, revealing a few surprises.

After the absolute train-wreck of the second-season finale, where the dispute between two competing dojos erupted into an all-school brawl, seriously injuring Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) and getting Samantha, (Mary Mouser) Robby, (Tanner Buchanan) and Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) busted, something had to give.

The new trailer shows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the original Karate Kid opponents turned Cobra Kai competitors put aside their differences and team up to help Miguel heal and save the rest of the Cobra Kai team.

Not only that, but John Kreese, (Martin Kove) the original antagonist in 1984’s Karate Kid, came back in season 2 and took over as the sole sensei of Johnny’s new Cobra Kai karate dojo with a ruthless “no mercy” philosophy. Daniel and Johnny also have to outwit Kreese to reclaim the dojo.

As for surprises, the trailer revealed an addition to the cast, this time from Karate Kid Part II, released in 1986. Tamlyn Tomita appears in the trailer for season 3 as Daniel meets up with Kumiko, who was his love interest in the film. Daniel’s old nemesis from Part II, Yuji Okumoto’s Chozen, also is there. Looks like Daniel has another big problem to deal with.

Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube Red and ran there for two seasons before being acquired by Netflix, where it was popular enough to be renewed for a fourth season before the third was even finished with production.

Season 3 premieres on January 8th on Netflix.
