There’s a new Kid in town.

Ben Wang steps into the role of apprentice karate student played by Ralph Macchio in 1984’s The Karate Kid, and by Jaden Smith in the 2010 remake of same for Karate Kid: Legends, coming out next year. Macchio is returning in the role of Sensei Daniel LaRusso that he plays in the Cobra Kai television series, and Jackie Chan reprises his role as Mr. Han from the remake.

Sony released a trailer Tuesday that showed Chan’s character and Macchio’s meeting for the first time, and also introduced characters new to the Karate-Verse.

The synopsis of the film reads, “In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere.

“When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.”

Wang was cast after Chan and Macchio announced a worldwide search for the next Karate Kid. Thousands of young actors from around the world auditioned for the role. 

Karate Kid: Legends is said to take place three years after the events depicted in Cobra Kai, which wraps up its sixth and final season early in 2025. director Jonathan Entwistle has said that Macchio and the Cobra Kai team have been involved in “little steps” along the way to help forge a seamless connection between the Netflix series and the new movie.

Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley and Ming-Na Wen round out the cast. Karate Kid: Legends was written by Rob Lieber. Karen Rosenfelt produced and Jenny Hinkey and Macchio serve as executive producers.

Karate Kid: Legends is due out on May 30th, 2025.
