Ayo Edebiri plays a chef in The Bear, but her role in a new A24 movie puts her in a role similar to the one Anya Taylor-Joy played in The Menu – which, though it wasn’t from A24, seems the best cultural reference when trying to describe Opus.

Edebiri plays Ariel, a young writer who is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star Moretti (John Malkovich), who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago. He’s back now to perform his greatest album, his opus, and Ariel is among the chosen few invited to hear it.

Ayo Edebiri is right to look nervous in this still from Opus. Screengrab courtesy A24.

“Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan,” according to the movie’s logline.

Island, remote compound…both seem like good places to die horribly.

Opus was written and directed by Mark Anthony Green in his feature directorial debut.  Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder and Tony Hale star, along with Tatanka Means, Young Mazino, Tamera Tomakili and Stephanie Suganami.

In addition to her Emmy-winning role in The Bear, Edebiri has scored recent roles in Bottoms, Theater Camp, The Sweet East and the voice of Envy in Inside Out 2.

Opus is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27th, and will perform in theaters beginning March 14th.
