Another Trip Through the ‘Labyrinth’: ‘Nosferatu’ Director Robert Eggers to Helm Sequel to David Bowie Fantasy Classic

Vampires, Werwulfs, Goblins and Oscars…oh my, it’s been quite a week for director Robert Eggers.
Wednesday, news came out from Focus Features, the arty subdivision of Universal Pictures, that Eggers would be helming horror film Werwulf, which he co-wrote with Sjón, to be released on Christmas Day, 2026.
Early Thursday, Academy Awards nominations were revealed, and Eggers scored four for Eggers’ 2024 release Nosferatu, in the Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design and Makeup and Hairstyling categories.
Also Thursday, TriStar Pictures announced that Eggers will co-write (again with usual writing partner Sjón) and direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s cult fantasy film Labyrinth. The Henson family is still involved; Lisa Henson is producing with Chris and Eleanor Columbus, and Brian Henson is executive producing.
Plot details haven’t been divulged yet, but it has been described as a sequel, not a remake of the 1986 original, which starred the late David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly and a cast of Muppets. Labyrinth is the story of 16-year-old Sarah (Connelly) as she navigates a vast, otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother, Toby (Toby Froud), whom she inadvertently wished away to the realm of Goblin King Jareth (Bowie).
Initially, Labyrinth had a lukewarm reception, both with audiences and critics, but over the years, it’s had a second life on home video and cable television, earning it a cult following that led to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, retrospective screenings and a fan masquerade ball.
There’s been no word on casting and no release date set for the Labyrinth sequel.
