Netflix is sending The Sandman off to Never-Never Land.

The streamer announced Friday that the show will conclude after the show’s upcoming second season. On Twitter, Netflix posted an image quoting Showrunner Allan Heinberg giving the reason for Sandman ending.

The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” Heinberg wrote.

Heinberg also wrote, “we are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

The first season of Sandman debuted in 2022, and was renewed that November. Production began in the summer of 2023, with new characters added to the cast in May, 2024. According to Variety, the characters being added to the story indicated that the producers were accelerating to the end of the storyline of the comic, created by Neil Gaiman.

Netflix did not refer to the multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Gaiman, who also executive produces the show, which went public in July of last year. Gaiman has been accused of assaulting several younger women, one who met the author at a book signing, and one of whom was in his employ as a nanny. Gaiman has claimed he did not assault the women.

Even if those allegations aren’t the stated reason for the show being cancelled, Sandman is far from the only Gaiman project affected since they went public. Gaiman is no longer producing or receiving credit for Amazon Prime’s upcoming series of Good Omens, which he wrote. Development on a movie based on his Graveyard Book was put on hold at Disney, a planned musical based on his book Coraline now will not happen, and publisher Dark Horse cancelled his Anansi Boys comic series.

Netflix hasn’t announced any changes to their plans to release the second season of The Sandman later this year.
