From the looks of the first full trailer, the Fantastic Four will make a stylish debut into the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer.

Set in an alternate version of the 1960s, Fantastic Four: First Steps nails the Space Race aesthetic, which is a great first step in setting the MCU’s film version of the superhero fam apart from its many predecessors, few of which are remembered that fondly.

The retro-future vibe is present in the apartment where Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) and the rest of the Four live, as well as in the sleek lines and angles of the Fantasticar, seen careening through the city streets.

The trailer shows us each of the heroes’ lives – just before they take their fateful trip into space and after they got their powers. Amidst the scenes of ordinary life – The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bacarach) in the kitchen with robot H.E.R.B.I.E., the Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) chilling in his room – we also get a sneak peek of global threat Galactus, who might be a bit smaller here than in previous Fantastic Four tales.

We also get a glimpse of John Malkovich, though the character he plays is not yet known. (He looks like Gandalf in the clip.) We do not get even hint of what Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) though. Ralph Ineson is the voice of Galactus, Julia Garner plays the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser and Natasha Lyonne also appear.

One of the cleverest Easter Eggs in the trailer is at the end, when the Fantastic Four pose on a stage that looks almost exactly like the platform that the Beatles played on when they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in February of 1964. See below.

MCU chief Kevin Feige has congratulated fans who have pointed out that the New York skyline featured in clips from the movie is not historically accurate, so perhaps in this universe, the Beatles never achieved fame in America, and the Fantastic Four filled the void the Fab Four left behind.

Fantastic Four: First Steps was directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and written by a Peter Cameron, Josh Friedman and Jeff Kaplan. Feige is the producer, The movie is due to blast off into theaters on July 25th.
