Special Counsel: Reese Witherspoon Introduces the New Elle Woods for Prime’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Series

Elle Woods is back, and younger than ever!
Reese Witherspoon, who originated the role in the Legally Blonde movies, took to Instagram Thursday to announce actor Lexi Minetree would be playing her in the upcoming prequel series, titled simply Elle, on Prime Video.
“Allow me to introduce you to the new Elle Woods! After watching so many incredible auditions for the new Elle prequel series on @PrimeVideo, we finally found our Elle. And today, I got to break the news myself! Meet @leximinetree,” she wrote in the caption.
In the video, Witherspoon dances around her hotel room, saying: “I’m so excited. Oh my god!” She then welcomes Minetree into the room and the two share a hug. Witherspoon then slowly reveals the results of her audition.
“Your audition tape was amazing, as we talked about,” she says. “And we had to make a really hard decision, and we wanted to tell you in person because you’ve just worked really hard. We just wanted to tell you that you don’t have to audition anymore because you got the part. You’re Elle Woods.”
Minetree starts crying and says, “Wait. Really?” with Witherspoon responding: “Yeah, you’re Elle Woods.”
Minetree was said to be one of the finalists competing for the role originally played by Witherspoon in the rom-com Legally Blonde (2001) and its sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003). This will be her first lead role. A third movie in the series has been announced, but has yet to materialize.
The show’s official description tells us that “Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”
Creator Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) is co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries. Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine company are among the producers, along with Amazon MGM Studios.
No premiere date for the series has been announced yet.
