Dearly Beloved: Prince to Strut Back Into Theaters for Special Theatrical Release of ‘Purple Rain’

The Kid is returning to help us all get through this thing called life.
Purple Rain, inarguably the best movie starring the late, dearly beloved artist Prince, will return to theaters for a one-night only re-release of a restored and enhanced version of the film on March 5th.
AMC Theaters in the US and Odeon theaters in the UK will all show a new Dolby Vision high-definition cut, with a Dolby Atmos sound upgrade. The restoration was screened to an enthusiastic audience last year in Minneapolis during the annual Prince Celebration on the movie’s 40th anniversary. Now Purple Rain will be available for everyone in the United States and United Kingdom to view.
Purple Rain tells the story of Prince stand-in The Kid, an up-and-coming singer trying to lead his band to greater fame while balancing personal relationships and internal squabbling among his bandmates. It was mostly shot in the Twin Cities, with many scenes taking place at the legendary First Avenue nightclub.
The iconic Purple Rain soundtrack went platinum 13 times and was number one on the Billboard album charts for 24 consecutive weeks, and remained in the top 200 for 167 straight weeks. Hits like “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and the title track also charted and received heavy airplay on radio and MTV. The Purple Rain soundtrack received an Oscar for Best Original Sound Score, along with several Grammys.
Purple Rain was written by William Blinn and directed by Albert Magnoli and featured Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, and the bands The Revolution, The Time and Apollonia 6 as themselves. Tickets for the special screenings ($15.50-$18.50) are on sale now via amctheaters.com.
