Back on the ‘Street’: Netflix Is Taking Another Trip to R.L. Stine’s Bloody Neighborhood in ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’
Netflix is throwing another Street party.
The streamer will debut another movie in its Fear Street adaptations, based on R.L. Stine’s young adult horror book series. Fear Street: Prom Queen, doesn’t have a year in its title, as previous offerings Fear Street: 1994, Fear Street: 1978, and Fear Street: 1666 did, but the trailer lets us know that this movie is set in 1988 during (of course) prom season.
The first three Fear Street slashers were released only a week apart in July of 2021, but the latest entry in the horror series seems like it will be a standalone.
Stine himself opens the trailer, reading, “most people would say killing teenagers is not a good thing. But here I am, and here you are for another chapter of Fear Street.”

Netflix’s official synopsis of Prom Queen reads, “In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”
Netflix’s first three Fear Street films began in the 90s, with the next two films going further and further back into the bloody history of Shadyside. Prom Queen will be the first R.L. Stine adaptation taken from a specific book: The Prom Queen, published in 1992.
“We’re back in Shadyside and the year is 1988,” director and co-writer Matt Palmer said in a Netflix statement. “With Senior Prom just two days away the race for prom queen is already heating up, but when somebody starts slaughtering the prom queen candidates, all hell is set to break loose. Think classic 80s slasher and all the fun that entails, but with compelling characters, needle drops, dancing and a whole lot more!”

The ensemble cast includes India Fowler (The Nevers), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls, Above the Shadows), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), and Chris Klein (American Pie), with Lili Taylor (Outer Range), and Katherine Waterston (The End We Start From).
Ariana Greenblatt, Darrin Baker, Rebecca Ablack, Ilan O’Driscoll, Damian Romeo, Dakota Taylor, Eden Summer Gilmore, Brennan Clost, and Cecilia Lee also star. Palmer and Donald McLeary co-wrote the screenplay.
Fear Street: Prom Queen is coming to Netflix on May 23rd, 2025.
