Get ready to relive the same murderous day(s) all over again: Happy Death Day is spawning a three-quel.

It’s been six years since Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to Happy Death Day (2017), came out, and in that time, fans of the Groundhog Day-style horror films have wondered when a third movie would be announced. Now it has.

At a double-feature screening of both movies Sunday, American Cinematheque, star Jessica Rothe and director Christopher Landon told panel attendees the good news.

“The third movie is moving forward,” Rothe said, getting a round of applause. Landon also confirmed the news. The two didn’t have anything more to disclose, meaning that the film is in development stage now.

Before the reveal at the panel, though, Landon has been quoted as saying, “I could say that I wrote a treatment. I didn’t write the script, because I wouldn’t write a script unless it was a sure thing.” He further added, “Here’s the cool thing: It is a bigger movie, and it is not set on the same day as the previous two films. That’s the biggest spoiler I’ve put out there.”

Though unconfirmed, the third movie’s title has been said to be Happy Death Day to Us.

The first movie starred Rothe as Tree Gelbman, a college student who is killed by a masked serial killer, only to wake up the next day – which is really the same day she just lived. Stuck in a time loop that ends with her inevitable murder every day, Tree turns to her friend Carter Davis (Israel Broussard) to help her figure out what is happening and to try to stop it.

Happy Death Day 2U, set on the same looping day as the original, took the franchise in a new direction, one that was more science fiction than horror, delving into the mechanics of time travel. The film also added some intense drama stemming from the consequences of trying to change the past for the better.
