Torn Asunder: Colman and Cumberbatch Devolve to Divorce, and Then Things Get Really Ugly in Trailer for ‘The Roses’
The trailer for The Roses, a remake of 1989’s War of the Roses, adds a little English to the original.
Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch play against type (for the most part) as the warring couple in the midst of a nasty divorce who escalate the proceedings from bickering to brawling.
Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) directs The Roses, the story of a “picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”

In the trailer, both insults and oranges are hurled, weapons are drawn, a menacing attack dog attends a divorce hearing, and counseling sessions fail as the couple battle for possession of their marital home.
“You are a bottomless pit of need!” snarls Ivy as the two fight over dinner. “Things are getting a little out of hand,” Theo deadpans as Ivy points a pistol in his direction.
The script comes from The Favourite and Poor Things scribe Tony McNamara.
The trailer highlights the stacked cast, playing characters who get caught in the intramarital shenanigans. Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon all star.
The Roses is inspired by the 1989 The War of the Roses starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and directed by Danny DeVito, who also starred. The film was based on the novel by Warren Adler, and the screenplay was written by Michael Leeson. The original scored a BAFTA and several Golden Globe nominations.
The Roses comes from Searchlight Pictures and will start dividing theaters on August 29th.
