A President and a Prime Minister fall out of an airplane…

No, it’s not the premise to a terrible joke. That’s the premise of Heads of State, a new movie starring Idris Elba and John Cena, and whether it’s a terrible movie or not is yet to be seen, though the trailer is quite promising.

The movie, coming to Amazon Prime in July, is about, “The UK Prime Minister (Elba) and US President (Cena) [who] have a public rivalry that risks their countries’ alliance. But when they become targets of a powerful enemy, they’re forced to rely on each other as they go on a wild, multinational run. Allied with Noel, a brilliant MI6 agent (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), they must find a way to thwart a conspiracy that threatens the free world.”

The trailer promises much in the way of action and adventure, and the combined charms of Elba and Cena lcould add a great deal of humor into what might otherwise be a rote actioner. The duo last teamed up for 2021’s Suicide Squad; Elba played Bloodsport and Cena originated his Peacemaker character.

Heads of State is directed by Ilya Naishuller, who helmed the Bob Odenkirk vehicle Nobody (2021). Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec and Harrison Query wrote the screenplay. Peter Safran serves as executive producer along with Cena and Elba.

Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, Sarah Niles, Richard Coyle and Paddy Considine round out the cast.

Heads of State makes soars onto Prime Video on July 2nd.
