The A Different World sequel series, currently in pre-production for Netflix, has cast a whole suite full of actors, including Tony-winner Maleah Joi Moon in the role of Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Whitley and Dwayne Wayne.
Also joining the cast are Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel. Alijah Kai Haggins is the daughter of actress Tichina Arnold.
The original A Different World debuted in 1987. It was spun off from NBC’s The Cosby Show in 1987, when the character of Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) went to Hillman College, a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). Though Bonet dropped out after her first season, but the show went on for six seasons, through 1993. The cast also included Marisa Tomei and Jada Pinkett Smith over its run. One of the most popular storylines involved the contentious romance between Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison.)
The show also starred Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson; Charnele Brow as Kimberly Reese; Dawnn Lewi as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor; Cree Summer as Winifred Brooks; Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor and Sinbad as Walter Oakes. It is not yet known which original cast members, if any, will reprise their roles.
The pilot for the sequel is set to film in Atlanta this June with Debbie Allen directing and showrunner Felicia Pride writing the script. The story will follow Dwayne and Whitney’s daughter as she attends an HBCU – though it is not known at this time if that will be Hillman College.
No premiere date has been announced for the series yet.
