The Disney Shuffle: House of Mouse Rearranges Marvel and Other Releases; Two ‘Avengers’ Movies Delayed

The future of the Avengers is farther away than ever.
The House of Mouse announced Thursday that the next two Avengers features will each be released about eight months later than previously announced. Avengers: Doomsday, previously set for a May 1st, 2026 release, has now been pushed back seven months, to December 18th, 2026. And the next film in the series, Avengers: Secret Wars, has gotten a similar push: instead of the planned release on May 7th, 2027, it is now scheduled for a December 17th, 2027 opening.
While fans aching to see Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Doomsday‘s main villain, Victor Von Doom as played by the former Iron Man, may find themselves disappointed, Disney did offer some compensatory news…for fans of Meryl Streep’s most acidic character.
Disney has arranged for 20th Century’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 to take Doomsday‘s date and open on May 1st of next year. The sequel will see Streep return as demonic Miranda Priestly, who must now navigate a world that is much more unkind to print media than it was when the original movie came out in 2006.
In other movie release news, Disney and 20th Century will open Ridley Scott’s star-studded apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars on March 27th, 2026.
Based on the novel by Peter Heller, The Dog Stars is set nine years after a flu pandemic wipes out most of humanity, watching as a grieving pilot and his loyal dog cling to survival in a remote Colorado airfield. The cast includes Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.
The rationale behind the shift is apparently due to the…well, hugeness of both MCU outings. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Insiders say Doomsday and Secret Wars are two of the biggest titles Marvel has ever made, and the date shifts help the production schedules (Doomsday is shooting).”
